Regardless of which Architect you choose to work with you should always consider the following:

Accreditation

First of all, you need to look out for professional accreditation that will help you to establish the credibility of an architects’ practice. For example EDG Architecture is a RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) chartered practice, and are bound by their code of conduct.

Architects must also be registered with the ARB (Architecture Registration Board) for the maintenance of professional standards. The title of an ‘Architect’ and the word ‘Architecture’ are protected by law in the same way that you cannot call yourself a doctor without having the appropriate qualifications. 

There are, however, others who use the phrases ‘architectural’ in their company name.  This usually refers to ‘architectural designers’.  These are individuals who produce designs without the RIBA or ARB qualifications, and are therefore not able to call themselves an Architect.  Whilst this does not mean they are not capable of designing a building, it most likely means that they are not trained in design.  There are some excellent architectural designers around but please ensure that they have Professional Indemnity Insurance etc before you employ them.

The Right Architect for your needs?

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’?  The concept is simple, you wouldn’t put a dressage horse into a race at Cheltenham, or a jump racing horse into a race on the flat, so why would you employ an architect specialising in retail projects for your house extension?

My point is that it’s important to recognise that not all architects provide the same services. Understand exactly what an architect offers and where their particular expertise lies.
